Infant holy, Infant lowly
for SATB choir
Programme note

My setting of Infant holy, Infant lowly uses the traditional Polish melody strictly – including the original descending final phrase which is rarely heard due to a misprint that has persisted for decades – but clothes it in rich new harmonies that tease out and emphasise elements of the text. The first verse is just for sopranos and altos, both parts divided, articulating maternal/angelic happiness and excitement. The second verse involves the full choir and is at first more quiet and contemplative, before it too embraces joy.
